As far as farm shops go, Mackenzies Farm Shop and Café offers more than most. Having served the local community for over 20 years, the Blubberhouses site is currently at its very best, having undergone a series of expansions following its takeover by the Palmer family in late 2019.
Paul and Gabby Palmer took the reins of the renowned ‘Mackenzies Smokehouse’ brand just before the first COVID lockdown, and just over three years later, the site has been completely transformed. Based just off the A59, a short drive away from Fewston and Swinsty Reservoir and a ten minute drive from Harrogate, the shop and café area are bigger than ever. The shop now covers a whopping 50 square metres, and stocks only the finest produce the county and its neighbours have to offer. A one stop shop to source the perfect gift, from cards, homeware and jewellery to accessories and gift-wrap.
The smokehouse still exists, producing the very same high quality smoked meats and fish it has done since its inception. The full range is available to buy in the adjoining shop, with classics such as smoked salmon, smoked kippers and streaky bacon still on offer. Several new products have been added to the range, including Great Taste Award-winning Hand-cut Cured and Delicately Smoked Yakitori Salmon, and Gin Botanical Salmon, adding a more modern twist to the offering.
One of the most recent developments in the shop is a brand-new butchery counter, serving the world-renowned Wagyu beef, farmed only a very short drive away at Brimham Rocks. The counter is manned all week long, with expert butchers on hand to offer customers any help and advice they may need.
The café has just launched its largest and most varied menu to date, with classic staples such as their famous fish and meat sharing platters on offer, as well as a brand new a la carte menu, featuring a number of warming autumnal dishes. If it’s just coffee and cake you’re after, their cosy snug area is ideal. Enjoy a Yorkshire coffee or tea and a homemade sweet treat, sit back and relax.
Christmas is just around the corner, and their food pre-order form will soon be live. You can buy all you need for the festive period, including your entire Christmas dinner. All you need to do is browse the form, either in store or online, and place your order. It will then be ready to collect a couple of days before Christmas. The all-important Christmas meat will be on offer, sourced locally and prepared by their expert butchers. A range of smokehouse products will also be available, including sides of their popular oak roast and smoked salmon, perfect for sharing on the big day, as well as staples such as stand pie and smoked bacon for those Christmas morning sandwiches.
