A hidden treasure from the 16th century

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Sicklinghall, Scott’s Arms is a charming country pub that effortlessly combines centuries of history with modern hospitality. Dating back to the 16th century, this beautifully preserved inn offers a cosy, inviting atmosphere that immediately transports you from the hustle of everyday life into a haven of rustic comfort.

As we stepped inside, the glow of open log fires and the warm ambience of low oak beams and stone floors welcomed us. The interiors are a tasteful blend of heritage charm and thoughtful refinement. The pub’s real showpiece, however, is its stunning beer garden, a well-tended outdoor space featuring a pergola, private dining pods and panoramic views of the rolling countryside. It’s a perfect spot for a summer lunch or a starlit evening drink. The drinks menu is impressively extensive, from fine wines and locally brewed ales to spirits and prosecco, the latter of which we opted for to set the tone of the evening.

The menu, full of tempting choices, strikes a pleasing balance between classic pub fare and more refined, seasonal dishes. I began with the Thai spiced crab and king fishcake (£9.50), served with a peppery watercress sauce that offered the perfect zing to complement the delicate seafood. It was a dish packed with freshness and flair. John chose the chilli and garlic sautéed king prawns, laid on a bed of wild rocket with toasted sea salt focaccia (£14.75). The flavours were bold yet balanced, with the prawns cooked to succulent perfection and the focaccia ideal for mopping up the delicious juices.

Our mains were equally impressive. I selected the 7-hour slow-roasted belly pork (£23), which arrived with confit garlic mash, balsamic red cabbage, baby pear, crackling and a cider jus. The pork was tender and richly flavoured, with a sweet and tangy depth from the jus and cabbage, while the mash was indulgently creamy with just the right hint of garlic. John’s choice of the 10oz garlic Barnsley lamb chop (£26) did not disappoint. Served with dauphinoise potatoes, minted pea purée, glazed carrots and a Merlot jus, it was hearty, beautifully presented, and cooked exactly to order. The lamb was juicy and well-seasoned, and the accompaniments elevated the dish with colour, texture, and taste.

We were tempted by the dessert menu, but the Barnsley chop and the 7-hour, slow-roasted belly pork had done their job, leaving no room for pud. We ultimately passed on the final course, but based on the glowing recommendation from our server, the sticky toffee pudding is firmly on our list for the next visit.

Scott’s Arms isn’t just about great food. The service is polished and personal, relaxed enough to make you feel at home, yet attentive enough to meet your every need. Whether it’s a romantic dinner, a celebratory meal, or a casual evening with friends, the Scott’s Arms feels special. For those wishing to make a night of it, the pub also offers five en-suite guest rooms, combining country style with modern comforts. There’s also a regular calendar of live music evenings - go to their website for details. Quality food, warm service and an idyllic setting. It’s a rare find where tradition meets creativity, and where each meal feels like a small celebration.
