The perfect getaway - The Ro Hotel at Bowness on Windermere

Some readers may know that this year I have a big birthday. I love to celebrate in style, several times over, with many different friends and family. However, this month, the emphasis was on my devoted husband, John’s, birthday. How could I match how much he is spoiling me all year?

The obvious answer was a trip to one of his favourite parts of England - The Lake District. After a couple of hours’ scenic drive from Wetherby we arrived at the renowned Ro Hotel at Bowness on Windermere. This special venue is the perfect getaway for an extra special birthday. However, the hotel prides itself on being an all-day destination for tourists and locals: a place to go for coffee and lunch, whether you are staying over or just popping by for a drink.

Our first impression was of a vibrant, luxurious, and friendly hotel where we received a very warm welcome. The staff could not do more for us throughout our stay. We were pleasantly surprised to see a fusion of traditional architecture combined with contemporary, chic features such as the modern bar. Every window reveals beautiful views of the Lake District and all the décor is beautifully presented. Ro Hotel is the perfect place for a special event with its large ballroom - perhaps my husband might book it for one of my own big birthday celebrations? The hotel hosts stunning weddings with couples travelling from all over the country to make the most of the magnificent backdrop for iconic wedding photography.

We stayed in the Wonderous Lake View Room, which was spacious, light, and airy with large windows looking out onto Lake Bowness. With en suite facilities, drinks and an ultra-comfortable king-sized bed, we could really relax and enjoy our stay. We had a delicious lunch at the bar before we headed out to Bowness town, to enjoy the shops, art galleries and cafés. We enjoyed Proseccos overlooking the lake and danced to live music. For water-enthusiasts, at the lake you can take a tour on the large boats or you could hire your own motorboats, paddleboards, canoes - whatever floats your boat!

The next day we had a fabulous breakfast in the restaurant, which quickly dispelled our sore heads. We helped ourselves to breakfast with a choice of full-English or Continental. To finish off a perfect birthday weekend away, we took our coffees back to the bar and enjoyed the views before heading back to Yorkshire. John thoroughly enjoyed his birthday celebrations at Ro Hotel and came back refreshed, revitalised, and ready to start planning for my big birthday!
