London accountancy firm relocates to Wetherby
McMillan Daley LLP
Established in Mitcham, South London,
in October 1998, accountancy firm McMillan Daley was launched, based on a passion to serve clients and a mission to be proactive accountants.
Founding partner Robert McMillan Daley’s aim was to help clients plan ahead with a view to avoiding certain adverse situations rather than reacting to them. Based on this principle, McMillan Daley opened its doors to the first client from a small room in a serviced office. Between 1998 and 2004 the business gradually expanded to larger premises as their client base grew from 0-100, a steady organic growth based on recommendations and referrals.
In 2007 the firm started focussing on tax planning based upon client requests to be even more proactive on tax matters, so they developed a series of tax planning solutions and later branched out into international tax planning, advising clients in many different tax jurisdictions and working with tax planning consultants in over 30 different countries. By 2009 McMillan Daley became a leading expert in international tax planning using certain asset protection and trust vehicles. At the start 2018 the firm was going through a major change as Robert relocated to Leeds and started looking for premises for the practice, when, by chance, he stumbled upon the charming market town of Wetherby.
The historic town is an attractive location for business as it serves most of the surrounding villages and provides direct access to larger towns and cities, most notably York, Harrogate and Leeds. It’s a prosperous place to live and work with both residents and visitors enjoying the many unique shops and restaurants that create a bustling hub of opportunity. Since relocating to Wetherby, McMillan Daley incorporated as a Limited Liability Partnership with founding Partner Robert Daley and senior partner Timothy Jeffs. The practice is listed as an ACCA accounting firm and is identified as Chartered Certified Accountants.
Robert is a Fellow Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), while continuing the path to that of a Chartered Tax Advisor with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). His area of expertise is in taxation, with over 30 years combined experience in practice industry and the public sector. He has gained knowledge and experience from working with different tax jurisdictions such as the UK, Switzerland, Luxembourg, South Africa, Bermuda, UAE, and the Caribbean. Robert started his career in accountancy in 1990 as an article clerk for a top Chartered firm in London, by 1994 he qualified and was welcomed as a member of the AAT. He took a break from public practice in 1996 and to gain some valuable experience in industry & commerce and the public sector, where he worked as Financial Controller for a large insurance company, a firm of Chartered Surveyors, as well as an NHS foundation trust in the role of Business Manager. Robert returned to public practise in 1998 to start McMillan Daley and his journey took him on a path to international taxation. The field of tax planning is highly research based and Robert has spent thousands of hours reading and researching tax cases and studying tax laws relevant to each jurisdiction in which he advises clients. Working with people and travelling is his passion and finding solutions to mitigate tax liability is his reward.
Robert comments: “Over the years I have met and worked with some really influential people of different cultures and even with language barriers, we worked together successfully. My most memorable client meeting was in Zurich, just before the global recession started in 2008, where I met with a small group of clients to present one of my largest ever research projects. Each client was fluent in over 7 languages including: English, German, French, Arabic, Russian and Italian. I only knew English then and I thought this would be the biggest obstacle in landing the clients - but they were so impressed by my presentation, during which I demonstrated one of my strengths, a fundamental understanding and respect for each of their cultures. They unanimously agreed to work with me, and during the acceptance speech one client jokingly said. “Now the hard work begins, you have at least five languages to learn!”
Senior Partner, Tim Jeffs, is originally from Peterborough but enjoyed Leeds as a university student in accountancy and finance so much he decided to make it his home. Tim has been looking at balance sheets for over 20 years, but he can also read music, so it was a close call between following a path in music or finance. Instead he does music in his spare time, having studied piano and guitar from a young age. Reading music requires a sharp eye however - something that proved useful throughout his career.
Tim’s training has been in accounts and audit and he has worked for top 10 firms, completing his ACCA in 2005. Whilst working in accountancy practices in Leeds he has been involved in conducting and leading audits around Yorkshire for many years before deciding that the endless travel each week between business to business was not a life plan. It was a good and often fun experience working in a new business each week and this taught him a lot about how different businesses operate as he worked closely with finance departments in a variety of businesses and charities. Doing an audit was like a moveable accountant, sitting with a new team each week, gaining their trust, and having to understand the inner workings of a business and testing their systems. Each week was a new desk and a new challenge, sometimes never quite knowing what to expect or what environment he would be put in.
More recently Tim has been more office based and enjoyed helping to grow new businesses as a senior accountant and Director, but the audit experience he gained was invaluable in quickly understanding how businesses operate, how to adapt to different challenges and situations and how to put together a thorough accounting report and summary of performance within a strict time frame. Robert and Tim realise that growing your business takes a significant amount of investment, both in time and resources. Their aim is to help you to run your business successfully and efficiently, knowing that all of your key administrative duties are being performed on time and to the highest standards. McMillan Daley provides clients with superior personalized services in the areas of taxation, accounting and business consultancy, by implementing practical solutions for clients’ diverse needs. They provide clients with the financial fuel to drive their ideas, inspirations and goals into profitable results, delivering their services in a timely manner all whilst searching for innovative solutions.
Tim says: “We like to feel that we offer a service, that we communicate politely and in plain English. Above all we put your interest above or equal to ours as we work in partnership with you, as your lead professional advisor, not only to help you to be successful, but to take away the day to day burden of all those things financial and regulatory while letting you focus on what you are passionate about.”
